If you’re new to Destiny 2, the A Spark of Hope quest is an essential mission that introduces key mechanics, important NPCs, and rewards you with a powerful Exotic weapon. This quest becomes available after completing the New Light introduction and gaining access to the Tower.
Step 1: Starting the Quest
A Spark of Hope quest is available once you’ve completed the New Light introduction in the Cosmodrome. If the quest doesn’t appear in your quest log, you can get it from one of two places:
- Commander Zavala – He is located in the Tower, on the balcony overlooking the Traveler.
- Quest Archive – If you don’t see the quest at Zavala, go to the Quest Archive terminal near the Postmaster in the Tower. Open the New Light section and pick up A Spark of Hope from there.
Step 2: Speak to Key NPCs in the Tower
- Talk to Commander Zavala
- Zavala is one of the three Vanguard leaders who guide Guardians. He represents the Titan class, but all Guardians interact with him.
- Find him standing near the balcony in the Tower. Simply walk up to him and interact to progress the quest.
- Speak with Ikora Rey
- Ikora Rey is the Warlock Vanguard and is located in the Bazaar section of the Tower.
- If you’re unsure where to find her, open your Tower map, mark her location, and follow the objective marker.
- After talking to Ikora, she’ll send you to meet another NPC outside the Tower.
- Travel to the EDZ to Find Devrim Kay
- Now, you need to leave the Tower and head to the European Dead Zone (EDZ), one of the first open-world locations you explore in Destiny 2.
- Open your Director (the in-game map system), select EDZ, and land at the Trostland landing zone.
- Once you arrive, you’ll find yourself in front of an old church. Devrim Kay is inside, located on the top floor.
Step 3: Clear Three Lost Sectors in the EDZ
Lost Sectors are small dungeons scattered throughout different destinations in Destiny 2. They contain enemies, a boss, and a loot chest at the end. Your goal is to clear three Lost Sectors near Devrim’s church:
- Atrium – Located below the church in a basement.
- Terminus East – Found inside an old subway station to the east.
- Widow’s Walk – Located in a boarded-up building to the west.
How to Complete a Lost Sector
- Look for the Lost Sector symbol (a small, white emblem that looks like a doorway with a dot in the center).
- Enter the Lost Sector and fight your way through the enemies.
- Defeat the boss at the end of the Lost Sector.
- Open the chest to officially complete the Lost Sector.
Step 4: Complete the Risk/Reward Mission in the Cosmodrome
How to Start Risk/Reward
- Open your Director, navigate to Cosmodrome, and select the Risk/Reward mission node.
- Launch the mission and follow the objectives.
What to Do in Risk/Reward
- Defeat Dusk Captains: These are elite enemies you need to eliminate before progressing.
- Find the Locked Gate: Follow the quest marker to a sealed gate in the Cosmodrome.
- Traverse the Chasm: This section involves a jumping puzzle. Be careful and use your class ability to navigate across the gaps.
- Take Arc Conductors from the Table: You’ll find an interactable object that will give you Arc Conductors—this is part of the mission.
- Enter the Fallen Nest: You’ll now fight through waves of Fallen enemies inside a hidden base.
Once you clear this mission, you’ll be rewarded with the Riskrunner Exotic SMG. However, to fully complete A Spark of Hope, there’s one last step.
Step 5: Return to Zavala & Complete the Quest
- Open your Director and travel back to the Tower.
- Speak with Commander Zavala to complete the quest.
- As a final reward, you will receive an emblem.

Why Riskrunner is Worth It
The Riskrunner SMG is a powerful Arc weapon that becomes stronger when you take Arc damage. It has the Arc Conductor perk, which:
- Increases damage output when you take Arc damage.
- Chains lightning between enemies, making it great for clearing large groups.
- Refills its own magazine, meaning you rarely need to reload when the perk is active.
This makes Riskrunner extremely useful in PvE activities, especially in Lost Sectors, Strikes, and Gambit.
